Dorothy Marie (Dot) Barnes, of Ridley Park, PA, formerly of Philadelphia, Aldan, and Sharon Hill, PA passed away peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Riddle Hospital, Media, PA.
Dot was born on May 18, 1935, in South Philadelphia, PA. Dot was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
She was the daughter of the late Charles and Dorothy (Inglesby) Sweeney. Dot graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Girls in 1953, where she was a member of the Spanish Club and the Student Association. Dot’s first job was at the Philadelphia Zoo; most of her working career was spent in administration at The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dot and Richie married in 1955 and purchased their first home in Philadelphia. In 1964, they moved to Sharon Hill where they raised their seven children. Dot was a proud and strong mother, who always provided her children with encouragement, wisdom and compassion. Her patience and understanding were a constant source of guidance, especially during challenging times. Dot was her grandchildren’s number one fan; she took great joy in attending their sporting and school events and celebrating their life milestones. Family traditions were the heart of her life, and she treasured the holiday gatherings that brought everyone together. Dot’s patience, kindness and compassion will continue to live on through her children and grandchildren. Dot had a remarkable ability to make friends and deeply valued her lifelong friendships from South Philadelphia and at West Catholic High School. Her circle of friends only grew over the years, a testament to her warmth and generosity of spirit.
Dot loved giving back to the community, coaching girls basketball for the Sharon Hill A.A., and volunteering at Williamson College of the Trades, Springfield Hospital and St. Rose of Lima’s Little Church School. She was a member of St. Rose and Collingdale Senior Clubs and actively supported her alma mater.
Dot had a deep faith and was a devoted practicing Catholic. Her Rosary was never far from her side and Dot held a special reverence for the Blessed Mother. Her deep spirituality provided her with strength and guidance throughout her life.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and the NYT Games. She also enjoyed knitting, watching classic movies, gardening and all things Irish. Dot loved spending time with her family in Sea Isle City and North Wildwood.
Dot will be deeply missed by her children Richard (Celie), Susan Liszewski (Walter), Lisa Borio (the late Edward), Kenneth (Mary Ann), John (Lisa), Dorothy A.
