I remember Burkey from my younger days in Richmondale. My two sisters, Mildred & Maryellen had the highest respect for him. He was the consummate professional & he liked a beer every now & then, which I enjoyed with him.

I married Ed’s daughter Karen in 1988 (best thing I ever did) and came to know Ed very well over the years. His duty to country and then to community – including scouting and his Silver Beaver award - were truly remarkable. There are a lot of people who benefitted from Ed’s time in the U.S. Army during WW II, and as a teacher or as a scoutmaster. Ed’s legacy will live on through many of these beneficiaries. Ed always had a joke and a very relevant phrase to capture an issue of the moment. As an avid gardener, he always had an abundance of vegetables and was eager to share his surplus. I am a better person for having the chance to know Ed and I will miss him. Ed lived the life he preached. He walked his talk. He was a very good and decent man.

My father, William Knight and Burkey's Father, Billy Payne of Richmondale were first cousins. I knew all of the Paynes' well and recently went to his sister, Beverly's funeral in Forest City, Pa. I remember him instructing us at the United Methodist Church in Forest City when we were teenagers (my friends and myself)at Youth Fellowship. We would swoon over Burkey as young girls do, as we thought him so very handsome!! He was kind and gentle as all the Payne's were. I knew Beverly,Katherine, Phyllis, Audry,Evelyn and Burkey. I know there were more, I believe that Burkeys Fathers' Mother (we called her Anti) and my Grandmother, Jane Knight, were sisters. I extend to you all my sincerest sympathies. You have good genes!!
