Elizabeth “Betty” Brennan (née Peters), of Springfield, Pennsylvania, passed away suddenly at home on July 23, 2025. She was 78 years old.
Betty was born alongside her twin sister Anne on March 13, 1947, in Philadelphia to Helen (née Georges) and Christopher Peters. A few years later, Betty and Annie were joined by their younger sister Helen “Cookie” and brother Christopher. The Peters siblings were raised in a home in West Philadelphia and later Lansdowne (1955) that valued hard work, education, and a deep sense of community. Betty was predeceased by her younger brother, Christopher Peters, whose memory she held close throughout her life.
Betty was determined and tenacious. Her life was defined by her extraordinary dedication to education, both as a student and a teacher. She graduated from West Chester University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education and went on to earn her Master’s in Education from the same institution in 1973. In her undergraduate years, Betty’s athleticism and drive earned her the distinction of All-American in women’s lacrosse, and upon graduating, she began her career as a beloved Health and Physical Education teacher and coach at Swarthmore High School.
Betty met the love of her life, Richard “Rich” Brennan, in the sweetest of places—at the Swell bubblegum factory. Their meeting marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership. After no time, Betty accepted Rich’s proposal of marriage at the Dairy Cottage on Woodland Avenue. They were soon thereafter married at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Springfield, PA. Together, they built a loving home in Springfield, becoming homeowners in 1972. It was here that they raised their two sons, Jason and Andrew “Andy.” The Brennan Boys were her whole world and would remain so for the rest of her life.
Tireless in her pursuits, Betty fulfilled a dream of becoming a nurse, graduating from Delaware County Community College in 1980. Her passion for nursing and teaching only deepened with time. She went on to earn a PhD in the Education of Health from Temple University in 1990. And still, Betty’s dedication to her own education knew no bounds; she completed yet another degree, her Master of Science in Nursing from West Chester University in 2012 at the age of 65. During her decades-long tenure as a nurse, Betty led Emergency Departments at Springfield Hospital, Lehigh Valley Hospital, and Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, garnering the Award of Leader of the Year at the last. Betty also served as Director of Emergency Services at both Taylor Hospital and, most recently, Chester County Hospital/Penn Medicine.
Betty maintained memberships in numerous professional organizations, including the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), American Association of Critical Nurses (AACN), American Nurses Association (ANA), Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders (PONL), and the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE). A lifelong student and researcher, Betty published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals such as the Journal of Emergency Nursing as well as the Journal of Emergency and Nursing Management. Her accolades are too many to mention.
A proud Springfield resident, Betty was deeply devoted to her community. She was in her neighbors’ words “The Heart of School Lane.” To that end, Betty and Rich’s annual Halloween barbecue, a neighborhood tradition that began some decades ago, will live on. Betty’s love of home and her medical expertise merged with Springfield’s Volunteer Ambulance Corp., an organization for which she volunteered for several years. As a parent, Betty never missed a track meet or lacrosse game during her sons’ tenures at Springfield High School. Additionally, she served as the Head of the Springfield Boys Booster Club for their 1992 State-Championship-winning season. Later, during Jason’s seasons with the Penn State Men’s Lacrosse team, Betty and Rich were their most devoted fans; each season, they made hours-long treks to both away games and home games at PSU’s Main Campus alike. Even this year, she clipped newspaper articles to commemorate the victories of the Springfield “Delco” High School boys’ and girls’ PA State Champion lacrosse teams and could be seen with Rich on the sidelines. She was also a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan.
Betty Brennan was, at her core, a respected leader and a mentor to many. Treating others with equal respect and kindness wasn’t merely second nature to Betty – it was a deeply held belief, a guiding principle that shaped her work, her relationships, and the legacy she leaves behind. Above all else, Betty will be remembered for her warmth, determination, patience, and boundless love, a love she shared with everyone in her orbit. She is survived by her devoted husband, Rich; her sons, Jason (Ana) and Andrew (Alex); her cherished granddaughter, Maya; her sisters, Anne Mullen and Helen “Cookie” Aronowicz (Stephen); and her many beloved nieces and nephews.
Betty’s life was a testament to perseverance, purpose, and the joy of giving back. Her legacy lives on in every student she taught; every patient she cared for; and every loved one she guided with grace.
