Irene Ellen Trayes

Irene Ellen Trayes of Lenni, passed away peacefully at home on August 26, 2026, at the age of 88.

Irene began working at a young age at the Aldon Rug Mill in Lenni. When the plant closed, she joined the Habbersett Company in Middletown, where she worked in the packaging department. Following the company’s closure, she began her career with JCPenney, where she remained until her retirement. She especially enjoyed assisting customers in the drapery department and took great pride in helping others.

Irene absolutely loved baking – pies and cookies were her specialties. Each year, she lovingly prepared beautiful trays of Christmas cookies and an assortment of holiday pies to share with family and friends. Her baked goods became a cherished tradition and were enjoyed by all who were fortunate enough to receive them.

She was the beloved wife of the late Gordon E. Trayes, Jr. (“Nup”). Married as teenagers, they built a life together that many admired – filled with love, devotion, and countless cherished memories. She can now rest peacefully, reunited with her soulmate and the love of her life.

She was predeceased by her parents Frank Lewis & Florence Beltz, her son Gordon “Eddy” Trayes, III, her grandson Matthew E. Hagis, & (4) older brothers Bill, Joe, Chuck, and Butch.

Loving mother of Patricia (Charles) Zernell, Debra (Nicholas) Hagis, & Sharon Martin (William Stamp).

She is also survived by:

(9) grandchildren – Valarie Zernell, Paula Zernell, Brenda Zernell, Melanie Zernell, Nicholas G. Hagis, Jr. (Carolyn McNish), Tamara Jones (Robert), Ashley Reilly (Dave), John Martin, Jr., & Brianna Martin;

(7) great-grandsons – Anthony Lee, Dominic Zernell-Lugo, Kaleb Pyant, Nicholas E. Hagis, Christian Hagis, Cameron Jones, & Colin Jones;

(1) great-granddaughter – Payton Ellen Reilly.

Irene’s funeral will be private.
