Joseph “Sonny” Vietro was born on January 11, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest son of Gennaro, Mary, and Margaret . He spent his early years in Fernwood Pennsylvania. He attended West Catholic high school before enlisting in the Marine Corps. Joe did his basic training at Camp Le Jeune in North Carolina and was deployed to Europe, spending most of his time in Italy. He was awarded the National Defense Service medal, the Naval Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct medal. While in Italy, he served as a small arms proof technician. Upon return to the United States, Joe met his soulmate Helen while working at Hollingworth in Clifton Heights. PA. Together they made generators for the government and they married on April 27, 1957. With the purchase of their home, Joe and Helen built a life of love, family, and friendship . They took great pride in their home in Glenolden and lived there together for 60 years. He was a proud union man and truck driver. Over the years, he worked for several trucking companies including Herman’s and Frames. Joe was always finding ways to provide for his family and one of those jobs was working as a part-time car mechanic at Chandler’s Flying A. Above all, he was also a self-proclaimed handyman starting many business with friends and family such as Action Air and Sonny and Sonny construction.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife Helen, his parents , and his sisters: Della, Carol, and Peggy. He is also predeceased by his daughters-in-law Maria (Jimmy) and Nancy (Joey).
He is survived by his sons Jerry (Robyn), Jimmy (late Maria) and Joey (late Nancy), along with 6 grandchildren: Kara (Jim), Ginnine (Shane), Taya, Nicholas (Samantha), Anthony, Dante (Tara), 4 great-grandchildren, his brother Jerry, his sister-in- law Jade and many loving nieces and nephews. He relished his roles as husband, son, brother, Pop, Pop Pop, uncle, cousin, brother-in-law and godfather. Family was everything to Joe. He provided unlimited love, hospitality, and delicious food to his family and multitudes of guests in his home who became his extended family. Joe always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. He possessed an unwavering faith and was a living example of Christ in the way he served his church, community and family, always putting the need of others before himself. He was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima church for 60 years.
Visitation: Relatives and friends are invited to join in his celebration of his amazing life at Our Lady of Fatima church 1 Fatima Drive, Secane, PA. on Thursday morning, April 27, 2023. This day would have been Joe and Helen’s 66th wedding anniversary. Visitation will take place from 9:30 to 10:45 am. His Funeral mass will follow at 11 am. Inurnment will be at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery.
