Josephine Emily, (nee Buccino) of Springfield, PA, died peacefully on October 13th, 2022, at home while surrounded by loving family at the age of 101. She was predeceased by her devoted husband Frederick, Sr.
She was the daughter of the late Alfonso and Elizabeth “Elisa” Buccino (nee Rossi) of South Philadelphia, PA.
She is survived by her daughter Barbara Ferster (William) of Saylorsburg, PA, her son Fred, Jr. (Marie) of Downingtown, PA, her daughter Roberta Kuhfuss (David) of Springfield, PA and son Michael (Cindi) of San Ramon, CA. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren Brenna, Jake, Henry, Avalon and Devyn.
Josephine was also predeceased by her older brothers Gabriel and Ernest.
Known affectionately as Josie, Jo or Aunt Gigi, she was born and raised on Mole St. in South Philadelphia at the start of the Roaring 20’s. A first-generation Italian American, Josie was nicknamed “Spindles” as a kid due to her long legs that allowed her to beat anyone in the neighborhood in a race. A sharp study from the start, she was able to skip ahead a grade in elementary school. During World War II, she began working at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. She loved the excitement and energy of the job, as well as the feeling of success and independence. Some of her fondest memories were of this unique time period in history. Together with some of her workmates, Josie was on a championship bowling team from 1948-1949 with a beautiful trophy to show for it. With her girlfriends, she would frequently travel down to Atlantic City on the weekends, and one fateful trip, she met the love of her life, Fred. They married in 1950, and Josie continued working at the Navy Yard until 1951 when she informed her employer she was pregnant with her first child – and then promptly lost her job due to her ‘condition’. Thus began her second career as a homemaker extraordinaire!
Through the years, Josie became known for her generosity and devotion to family and friends. She would gladly help anyone in need and often cared for all those around her. She was beyond gracious in her hospitality, and it would be a near impossibility to leave her house hungry. And oh – could she ever cook. The catalog of recipes, each tweaked to perfection, were all committed to memory, and everyone who knew her benefited greatly by her expertise in the kitchen.
A special thanks to Josie’s wonderful caregiver in her final years, Jasonette Acquoi, whose skill and ever calm demeaner allowed Josie to stay in her home, and her kids to stay comforted that their mother was always so well cared for.
