Martin G. “Marty” Hayden of Drexel Hill, PA, passed away suddenly on May 6th, 2023. He was 64.
Born in Broomall to Joseph and Virginia Hayden on October 28, 1958, Marty was a funny and kind man. Marty spent most of his childhood on Hunt Road in Newtown Square with his parents and 3 siblings, Cathy, Joseph, and Michael – a wonderful neighborhood filled with loving friends and countless memories of block parties, backyard football games, sleigh riding, and open-house gatherings. A family could not have asked for a better place to live.
After attending Malvern Preparatory School, where he met most of his lifelong friends, he went on to attend the University of Delaware where he studied economics and was a proud member of The Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He was an exceptional two-sport athlete for the Blue Hens; a standout in both ice hockey and lacrosse.
Marty and his former spouse, Mary Pat raised 3 wonderful children, their proudest and greatest achievements: Catherine, Marty Jr., and Patricia. Nothing brought Marty more happiness than being surrounded by and supporting his children at all stages of their lives. Some of his best memories were watching his children from the sidelines during their many sporting events. It wouldn’t be a Hayden sporting event if Marty wasn’t “lounging” on the sidelines cheering on his kids. Marty and Mary Pat remained good friends throughout his life.
As all classic love stories begin, Marty met Marcy at The Whitebrier in Avalon, NJ on June 30th, 2006. Marcy was the light of Marty’s life. They enjoyed going on dinner dates and loved their early morning bike rides together. He was her biggest cheerleader and supporter during her running events and triathlons at the Jersey shore. Marty would remark daily on how lucky they were to have each other.
Marty was his happiest on his boat “The Chopper”. On most summer days, you could find Marty and his “first mate” Marcy, chartering friends and family on “The Chopper” for back bay fishing trips, tubing and water skiing afternoons or cruising to happy hour to “dock & dine”. Whenever there were “keepers”, Marty would create a fresh, 5-star meal for family and friends to enjoy.
His favorite role was that of grandfather, or “Choo Choo,” to his beautiful “little big men,” Joey and Ryan. If his grandchildren were around, that is also where you would find Marty, whether playing with his antique train set, making Thanksgiving apple pies, fishing in local ponds, or making mischief of any sort. Choo Choo always brought the fun and the mess.
As a member of Overbrook Golf Club for more than 28 years, he always felt at home when on the grounds. On most beautiful spring afternoons, you could find Marty with his “4 o’clock” crew on the 1st tee at OGC. Marty was always the first to crack a joke, and no one would laugh louder or harder than Marty did at those jokes. Marty’s favorite partner on the golf course was Marty Jr. When they played as a team, they were truly a force to be reckoned with.
Upon graduating from college, Marty joined his father Joseph in their family business. Joseph M. Hayden Associates became one of the leading manufacturer’s rep agencies for hardware supply products in the area, with decades of experience since incorporation in 1933.
Marty is predeceased by his parents Joseph & Virginia and sister Cathy (late Gil) Roehrs. He is survived by his partner Marcy Kolongowski, his brothers Joseph (late Lynn), Michael (Allison), and his children Catherine (Joseph), Marty Jr., and Patricia, and his two grandchildren “little big men” Joey and Ryan.
