Michael “Mike” A. Kellar

Michael “Mike” A. Kellar, aged 65, passed into eternal life on August 31, 2025.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Joanne T. (nee Berry) Kellar, his three sons Kevin (Sara), Collin, and Kenneth (Erin), his siblings; Margaret “Peggy” Mary Kellar (Eric), and William J. Jr. (Elizabeth “Beth” nee Bauer) Kellar, his mother-in-law Doris (nee MacIvor) Berry, and his brother-in-law Rich (Susan “Sue” nee Manocchio) Berry. He is predeceased by his parents Margaret M. (nee Burns) and William J. Kellar, and his brother Daniel Kellar.

Mike was a lifelong teacher, friend and neighbor who was active and engaged in his community. As a young man, he was passionately involved in the Boy Scouts of America, where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. His love of scouting and the lessons it imparted continued into his adult life, where he served as a scout leader in his sons’ troops for many years.

A proud graduate of Drexel University’s School of Engineering, Mike worked as a civilian contractor for the U.S. Navy for many years under the NAVSEA organization at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and in Norfolk, VA. It was there that he proudly worked on projects building vessels for the U.S. Naval fleet. His career took him across the globe, where he studied civilian naval engineering in Germany, before working for Kvaerner shipbuilders in Philadelphia.

During his sons’ youth, Mike was a coach and community leader. Mike served for a time as president of the school board of Holy Cross school. As a coach he could always be heard on the sidelines cheering his sons and their teammates on, whether it was baseball, track, basketball or Ice hockey. He was well known at the Springfield ice rink for whipping up the crowds to cheer on their teams. In credit to his sense of fair play- he would usually cheer for both teams. His encouragement was infectious. Ever the patient teacher, he spent many hours tutoring, helping (and sometimes arm-twisting) his sons with their schoolwork.

Later in life, Mike found a love for formal teaching and began to pass on engineering skills to a new generation. He educated students at the Delaware County Community College in the S.T.E.M. section, instructing them in Mathematics, Principles of Engineering and Machining. He was a powerful advocate and mentor to his students and was fiercely proud of them and their work.

Throughout his life, Mike was continuously engaged in his community. A longtime member of his local Springfield Democratic party, he was a familiar face at the polls around

election day, and it was common for his neighbors to see him cheerfully going door to door or standing for hours at the polls in the November chill carrying out his Civic duties.

Most of all, he was the friendly neighbor that everyone seemed to know, who would happily stop to talk during his daily walks with his loyal dog “Florrie.” He had a curious mind, a passion to learn new things, and a highly exercised sarcastic wit. Those who knew him best will forever miss his kindness, his gentle encouragement and his sense of humor.
