I was deeply shocked hearing the news, it was really unbelievable that the person I spoke a day or two before won’t be speaking any more. I worked closely with Bob since last few years, he was a wonderful person to work with, an architectural mastermind and his principles will be followed by generations in Xperi. He was also a very inspiring and fun loving person, keeping things cool under difficult situations. His contributions and inspiration will be missed by all of us in Xperi.

My heartfelt condolences to Maria and family and friends. I am so saddened to hear of your loss. I have the best memories of times with Bob. We were longtime coworkers until I retired. I first got to know Bob in the early 80s while we were consulting at SRI. Later, at Fulltilt in the aughts we reconnected as we needed to address some nasty performance issues we were having with our product. Back then Bob was a DB2 and SQL Server guy. He picked up Oracle on his own and proved more worthy than experience DBAs. Bob had evolved into a great data architect with extraordinary problem solving skills - especially around data management. Bob was the guy we needed. After we went out of business and I landed at Rovi (TiVo) Bob was my first hire as we had some crazy data "designs" to rearchitect and I knew he was the right guy. As I told him as I recruited him, we had a target rich environment. Once again, Bob excelled. We were "work friends". But we ate enough lunches together and traveled together so I got to know his other side. He was also a great person. He was always kind, generous with his time and fun to be around. He always made me smile and frequently made me laugh. Last I spoke with him he was still at TiVo - I joked that he'd turn the lights out. Bob's impact has been far and wide. RIP Bob Thompson.

Bob was on my team at Xperi. I'm sharing here the note I sent to his team members and colleagues which touched on his importance to the organization. I miss him - it's hard to believe he's gone. ---------------------------------- Bob had been with Xperi for over a decade and was a key architect within Metadata Engineering. He led system and database design on many of the components in use today. TiVo, Classic Guides, TMIS, and numerous external solutions all run on metadata ingested and served out by systems on which Bob played an integral design role – we are all in his debt. As anyone who worked with him knows, Bob consistently asked a key question when evaluating solutions – “what business purpose is this serving”. This questioning sharpened the focus of work being done and raised his colleague’s awareness to where, the importance of it being understood, they sought out that clarity as well. In his role as influencer, mentor, and leader, Bob helped lift overall MDE work and process quality, steering the organization toward a more professional stance. It’s something of which I know he was proud. Bob will be missed, and I ask all of you to hold his family in your thoughts.
