Sister Margaret was a gift to me from the time she taught me at GMA. I kept in touch with her spottily over the years. One year I had a chance to reciprocate in a modest way by giving her tickets to a concert with Toshi Reagan, an extraordinarily gifted artist, and Toshi's mother, Berneice Johnson Reagan, one of the most gifted and beloved women in music and in the civil rights movement. Sister Margaret was thrilled by the experience. It makes me happy to remember her pleasure.
I remember hearing a bit about her time in Sudan. It wasn't easy for her, I think.
Her brilliance as a teacher is what has benefitted me mostly, over the decades. She brought a passion for truth and justice, and showed us how to think critically, and cultivate nuance.
I can see her smile and hear her voice as I write this. I called her on her birthday last month, but she couldn't talk. I meant to send her a note, and didn't. So, a last gift from her: to act on those good instincts, to strive to live in the Eternal Present/ce.
I know her memory is a blessing already, and trust she is resting in peace.
