Sister Margaret Songster, age 93 died on March 9, 2017.Sister Margaret Songster (1923-2017)Sister Margaret Songster (formerly Sister Mary Silverius ) a teacher and mentor for many years, died peacefully at McAuley Convent in Merion on March 9, 2017. She was born in Philadelphia to Thomas and Margaret Songster on April 4, 1923. She was educated at St. Agatha School and at West Catholic High School from which she graduated in 1940. Later on, as a Sister of Mercy, she earned a B.A. in Education and an M.A. in Latin from Villanova University.S. Margaret entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1940. She ministered in several grade schools and high schools in the Philadelphia area and in the dioceses of Allentown and Williamsburg, Virginia. Among her favorite places were her summers spent at Camp Jeanne D’Arc in the Adirondacks and Roman Catholic High School where she left a long and lasting impression. The memories of her tenure at Roman Catholic were etched in her heart and soul. She also volunteered as a telephone contact for patients at Mercy Home Health, a task that she loved.S. Margaret was known for her spirit of prayerfulness and her love of life, family, and community. She is remembered by family, friend, colleagues and students as a woman of kindness and compassion with a deep awareness of the needs of others. She kept in touch with many of these with notes, letters, visits, small gifts and was a frequent and recognized presence at weddings and funerals.S. Margaret is survived by her community and by her loving and devoted nieces and nephew, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.Relatives and friends are invited to her Viewing on Wednesday, March 15, 6-7 PM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 7 PM in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, 515 Montgomery Avenue, Merion Station, PA 19066. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery on March 16, at 10 AM.Contributions in Sister’s memory may be sent to the Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community at the above address.
