LAYER
Thomas “Tom” J. Layer, Sr., age 89, of Newtown Square, PA, passed away at Lankenau Medical Center on July 5, 2025, following a brief illness. Born on April 26, 1936, he grew up in Southwest Philadelphia, Tom was predeceased by his wife, Frances-Anne (nee Clark) Layer, his parents, Edna M. (nee Brennan) and Charles A. Layer, as well as his brothers, Charles Layer and Eugene Layer.
Tom graduated from West Catholic High School in 1955. After high school, he was drafted into the Army as a combat engineer. Following his military service, he worked several jobs and attended Temple University for a few years, taking courses in electronics and math. He then worked as a technical representative for Xerox Corporation for 35 years before retiring in 1995. After Xerox, he stayed active by working with his son’s asphalt maintenance business. He applied his creative and engineering skills to invent a line striper and a medical device for diabetics.
Tom was the life of the party and always saw the good in everyone. He was loyal to all who knew him and would do anything to help his family. Tom was enthusiastic about new projects, including building a family log cabin, even though he had never built a house before. He cherished his moments at the cabin, loved drinking coffee, enjoyed music and dancing, and cooking gourmet food for his dogs, but most of all he loved being with the love of his life of 62 years Frances-Anne.
Tom is survived by his three children: Thomas J. Layer, Jr. (Kathy), Timothy B. Layer (Christine), and Dana Layer. He also leaves behind three grandchildren: TJ, Erin, and Shane, and one great-grandchild, Theo.
