BILL LINDSAY – GARAGE SERVICE OWNERMr. William S. Lindsay, owner and operator of Lindsay Garage Service in Aston, passed away peacefully November 11th, 2016 at Taylor Hospice following a short illness.William was born in Trenton, New Jersey, May 30, 1920. He was the son of Mercer Thines Lindsay and Nina Bell Searcey Lindsay, who were descendants of Scottish pioneers and Cherokees. He spent summers in Cherry Log, Georgia where his mother was born and raised. His grandfather William Lindsay was Postmaster of Trenton, New Jersey. He moved with his parents to Detroit, Mich, where his father obtained work. In his teen years he lived in Washington, DC, where his father worked as a machinist.William entered the US Navy Oct 9, 1940, completing basic training at Newport, Rhode Island. His receiving ship was the USS Constellation, followed by the USS Nevada for two weeks. Following training, he transferred to USS Enterprise Dec 1940 to Oct 1941. Upon completion of “A” school, he graduated third in his class from ACMM Mech School, Jacksonville, Fla. He received orders to USS Long Island from May-Jul 1942 and joined Aircraft Carrier Squadron VGS1. He sailed through the Panama Canal to San Francisco’s Long Beach Naval Yard and participated in the battle of Midway. After the US victory at Midway, he was stationed at San Diego June 1942-Dec 1944, completing five voyages to Casablanca on board USS Card. His ship received 2 Presidential Unit Citations for sinking 22 U-Boats and capturing 43 German prisoners. He then transferred to Creed’s Field Air Station at Norfolk, Va until Sept 1945 when he transferred to Oceana NAS, Va Beach, Va. where he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer. Initially discharged Sept 1946, he reentered the Navy in July 1949, joining anti sub VC-33 Squadron and VX-3 Experimental Air Squadron from 1949-1953, completing 5 Mediterranean cruises. Additional ships he served on were the USS Wright, USS Roosevelt, and the USS Leyte. Discharged in July 1953, he rec’d a personal commendation from Commander Noel Gayler who later became USPACOM. After discharge he was hired by Pisacki helicopters, worked 17 years for Boeing, and started a 34 year specialty car shop in Boothwyn, where he repaired German vehicles. He later moved to Aston where he expanded the business. In 1987, he was hired by DCIU as an Auto Shop Assistant at Aston Alternative School, retiring after 12 yrs. In 1999 he was hired by Boothwyn Wal Mart as an assembler. William retired in May 2005 at age 85. He enjoyed fishing on the Delaware Bay, owned multiple boats, and did automotive work until he was 90 years young as well as doing his own property maintenance and home repairs until age 95.Predeceased by his former wife Virginia Mae Lindsay, Bill is survived by his wife of 37 years Mary Griffiths Lindsay and six children: Ann Lindsay of Boston, Nancy Myers of Wellsville, New York, Michael Lindsay of Phoenixville, Pa, Karl Lindsay of Chesapeake Va, Chief Petty Officer Kurt Lindsay (Fleur) of Guam, Katelin Granados (Rafael) of Austin,Texas, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family.
