JAMES J. SANDONE
James J. “Slim” Sandone of Glenolden PA died on December 19, 2014.
Born in Drexel Hill in 1939, he was raised in West Philadelphia and in 1957, he graduated from St. Thomas More High School in Philadelphia.
From 1959 to 1964, he was employed with the United States Department of Defense, in Philadelphia, where he worked in the data processing department. It was there that me met his future wife, Carol, with whom he has 3 grown children; Steven, Debra and James, Jr.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1962 and was honorably discharged in 1967. He later went on to employment as a project manager with Polselli & Angelucci, a general contracting firm located in Glenolden, from 1966 to 1972.
He also attended St. Joseph’s University, Pierce School of Business and Temple University, where he completed coursed in general business, accounting and architecture.
In 1974, he started his own business, Delaware County Janitorial Service, Inc. When it began, the business was operated out of his home basement as a simple janitorial company. Over time, the company expanded to become a full service restoration company, known as Delaware County Fire Restoration, Inc., specializing in restoration of property damage by water, fire, smoke, wind and other perils.
In 1979, Mr. Sandone was elected to the position of 3rd Ward Commissioner of Darby Township, PA. He served the residents of Darby Township ever since, having been re-elected eight times. As commissioner, he was also appointed to serve as Police Commissioner to monitor the general operations of the Darby Township Police Department.
One of the highlights of his career occurred in 1992, when he had the pleasure of meeting President George H. W. Bush, who at the time was the sitting President of the United States.
He is survived by his wife, Carol E. (nee Smith); his children, Steven A. Sandone (Mary Ann) , Debra S. Smith (Michael) and James Sandone, Jr. (Erika) Also survived by 8 grandchildren; Anthony, Jonathan, Lucia and Massimo Sandone; Vincent, Nicholas and Michael Smith and Jade Klein; 1 great-grandchild, Mario Santini and was predeceased by grandson, Christopher Smith.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing on Friday evening, Dec. 26. 4 to 7 PM, and Saturday morning, 9-10:45 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 1 Fatima Drive, Secane, PA 19018 followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 AM. Interment Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to St. Thomas More Alumni Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 294 Drexel Hill, PA 19026 would be appreciated.
