HUGHES
George M., age 86, on August 23, 2025, of Springfield, PA, formerly of Havertown, PA passed away peacefully with his loving family and 2 childhood friends by his side.
Predeceased by his son, George Hughes, his parents, Grace (nee Martin) and George M. Hughes, and his sister, Grace D’Alonzo.
Survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen (nee Hawk) Hughes, his daughter, Debbie O’Connor (Bill), his four grandchildren, Dean Bergey, Kara (Rick) Bergey-Cook, Alison H. (Tyler) Talbot, and George M., his sister, Diane Andre, and his daughter-in-law, Kathy Hughes.
George was born in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in Havertown with his parents and twin sisters. He was a graduate of Haverford High School.
A quiet, patient and wonderful man, his first love was for his wife and children. He worked tirelessly to provide for the family.
Love of everything auto was second. George started working on cars at an early age after his father passed away suddenly. He spent his career repairing, restoring and showing cars. His father was a founding member of the Antique Automobile Club of America. George expanded upon and kept the legacy going with his membership to Historical Car Club of PA, Horseless Carriage Car Club, Antique Automobile Club of America, and Corvette Club. He won many trophies for his collection as well as others. He was also a founding member of Wheelmen highwheel bicycle club. His accomplishments were many but his willingness to help others was remarkable.
He also enjoyed the adventurous side; along with Captaining his 28’ Bertram, he was an avid scuba diver and discovered new wrecks off the New Jersey coast with his friends. When he wasn’t in the water, you could find him on it fishing or crabbing. He spent each weekend at the shore during the summer with Helen and their children, then later with
spouses and grandchildren. George and Helen would travel either by boat, car, antique car or plane, depending on the choice of location. One thing always remained the same…it was always together. They experienced life to the fullest.
The love and affection of his wife Helen prevailed throughout their years and she remained right beside him with the last hug and kiss.
Relatives & friends are invited to his Visitation Wednesday, September 3rd 10:00 AM – 11:45 AM followed by his Memorial Service 12 NOON in the Main Chapel at the DAnjolell Memorial Home of Broomall, 2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall, PA 19008. Inurnment Private.
