Robert Allison Matthews III “Bear” passed away on May 15, 2025. He spent his final days surrounded by loved ones and passed peacefully with his wife and soulmate Lois by his side.
Bear was a free spirit. There’s no way to mention Bear without mentioning music. A skilled guitar player and life-long fan of rock and roll he leaves behind many former band and jam mates in the Philly music scene. Bear was a lover of history, good horror movies, dogs and cared about the environment. He was a knowledgeable Numismatist. Bear had a great sense of humor and a way with words. He truly loved conversing and enjoyed a good argument sometimes too. He had an especially close bond with his beloved dog Sebastian aka “Squatch.” He hated shoes, and he never shaved. He also left behind many, many friends and cherished neighbors from all over Philly and Delco. He was a life-long Eagles fan.
Bear was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Springfield. He was a hard worker who prided himself on taking excellent care of his tenants. He enjoyed his work in research and dermatology as well. He traveled all over the US, living in Northern California for some time before he hitchhiked his way back East.
Son of the late Robert Allison Matthews Jr. & Sarah Matthews (nee Perdue,) Devoted husband of Lois (nee Morris), loving father of Robert Allison IV (Jenna) Matthews, Jessica Anne (Matthew Pugliese) Matthews. Survived by Lois’s children and grandchildren. Also survived by his grandson Kevin Doughtery, siblings Michael (Amy) Matthews, Mark (Joan) Matthews, Barbara (Dave) Damon and by many loving Nieces, Nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
