Bernard L. McDevitt, 84, of Havertown, a retired CPA, died on Sept. 5, 2005 at Little Flower Manor in Darby, of Parkinson’s disease.
Mr. McDevitt was born in Reading, PA and graduated from St. Peter’s High School. Although he began his college education at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Mr. McDevitt withdrew from college and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the beginning of WW II. He served as a radioman on a Liberty ship in the Pacific Theater until the end of the war.
While on leave in 1943, he married Anne Simpson of the Wissahickon section of Phila. They had 2 sons, Robert and William. His wife died in 1990. He later married Gloria Spano.
Mr. McDevitt completed his college education at St. Joseph’s University in 1947 with a degree in Accounting. He began his accounting career as a CPA with Fernald & Company in Phila., which later merged to become part of KPMG, L.L.P. During the early 1970’s, he was one of the nation’s foremost experts on wage and price controls that were imposed during the Nixon administration to curb hyper-inflation.
Mr. McDevitt was a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs. He served on and chaired several committees in both organizations. In addition to being a member of several other professional organizations, he was a member of the Union League of Philadelphia. He also served for many years as the treasurer of the Havertown Rotary Club.
Mr. McDevitt enjoyed traveling, reading and golf.
In addition to his sons and his wife, he is survived by 4 grandchildren, 2 sisters and 3 brothers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s University Annual Fund, or St. Dorothy’s parish.
