FLANNIGAN
Donald “Don” H., age 86, of Newtown Square, PA passed away on October 2, 2024 after a long illness from a stroke.
Don was a graduate of North Catholic High and after high school spent 6 years in the Army National Guard. Don started his work career at United Engineers and Constructors as an electrical designer and attended night school at Temple University. Throughout his career Don worked on various oil and nuclear power plants and traveled all along the east coast to the various projects.
Don mostly loved spending time in Avalon, NJ and for a short time in Naples, FL. He enjoyed the casual beach lifestyle making new friends and inviting old friends to enjoy the beach.
He appreciated the warm friends and the many events the borough would host. You would run into Don either sitting on his front porch, or at the Memorial Day parade, 4th of July fireworks and the Christmas Tree lighting. He was living his best life in Avalon. His time in Naples was a break from the day to day hustle up north and gave him time to unwind and enjoy the simple slower life in Florida. Many of his friends would also spend time in Florida and truly it was his 2nd home away from home.
Don’s real enjoyment was being a member of the Avalon Yacht Club. Don was a member for over 30 years and was a Flag Officer, a Commodore and a member of the Board of Trustees. Don made many friends at the Club and spent much of his time enjoying the many events and the special time on his boat. Don was also an accomplished dancer and enjoyed dancing the night away at many of the Club events.
Don was also member of the Lions Club in Avalon and donated many hours of his time raising funds for the Helen Diller Home in Avalon. Don also belonged to the Avalon fishing pier at 30thstreet.
Don was also an avid sports fan and a very devoted Philadelphia sport fan. If there was a game on TV, Don was watching, of course Philadelphia sports teams first, and then any other sport or team that was on TV. Any given Sunday afternoon Don’s time was filled with sports. He was not one to talk back to the TV but you could tell when his team was winning or losing.
Don appreciated going out to dinner with friends and family. He delighted in hosting meals and finding new and interesting places to patronize. Don was fond of big family dinners and holiday meals. He was the consummate host, checking on everyone to ensure there was plenty of food and drink.
Don would also do anything for anyone, regardless of the need, time or cost. Don was willing to do his part without question. He was always there to help weather it was for charity family or friends.
Predeceased by his son, Donald, his grandson, Donald, his parents, Madeline and Hugh Flannigan, and his sister, Carole.
Survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary “Marie” A. (nee Santella) Flannigan, his daughters, Patricia Harbison, and Maureen Mantagna, his five grandchildren, and his great-grandson.
Relatives & friends are invited to his Visitation Wednesday, October 16th 10:00 AM – 10:45 AM followed by his Funeral Service 11:00 AM in the Main Chapel at the DAnjolell Memorial Home of Broomall 2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall, PA 19008. Inurnment will be at a later date.
