Born to Eternal Life: March 17, 2026
Beloved wife of the late Richard Joseph Mott, cherished mother of Celeste Elaine Stewart, Cynthia Lynne Harrity, and Robert Francis Mott. Loving grandmother of Brandon Richard Stewart, Elaine Maria Stewart, Nicholas Daniel Stewart, Carl Robert Stewart, Spencer Francis Harrity, Brian Nicholas Harrity, and Julia Nicole Mott and delighted great-grandmother of Evelyn Marie Stewart. Devoted mother-in-law of Daniel Howard Stewart, John Charles Harrity, and Larissa Maria Mott and grandmother-in-law of Rachel Mae Stewart. Elaine was born in Philadelphia 91 years ago to Rose Mary Rigali and Nicholas Varallo. She loved her brother, Francis Alfred Varallo, who introduced her to his friend and Villanova electrical engineering classmate Richard. Elaine and Richard began their beautiful 62-year journey together in Philadelphia. She attended Saint Donato Elementary School and West Catholic High School. In her early career, she worked for the United States Air Force. Elaine graduated from Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary with a Master of Arts in Moral Theology. Her vocation was pastoral leadership, and she used her exceptional knowledge of Sacred Scripture and Catholic Tradition for more than three decades in various roles for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Elaine was devoted to her family and inspired her children and grandchildren to embrace their faith and celebrate life’s magnificence. She enjoyed the excitement of vibrant cities and the simplicity of the beach and ocean with Richard in Ocean City. Elaine and Richard treasured their trips to Italy where she explored her family’s heritage in Lucca, Toscana and the ancient village of Piano di Coreglia. They received Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Blessing during a papal audience. Elaine had great compassion and kindness, and all who knew her benefited from her quiet acts of charity and care. Her love extended to all God’s creatures, both great and small, and she took delight in caring for them. To know Elaine was to love her.
