Eugene Stephen McGonigle, of Fortescue, New Jersey, passed away peacefully in his home on July 25, 2026 at the age of 87 surrounded by family.

Gene was born on December 26, 1938 and raised in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by his Parents George McGonigle and Rena “Dorothy” (née Ransom) McGonigle. He was one of nine children.

An attendee of West Catholic High School, Gene grew up to become a hardworking and determined man of many trades: a machinist, electrician, printer, and finally, an auto mechanic at his very own shop, Gene McGonigle’s Auto Repair, in Darby, Pennsylvania.

Gene was a longtime resident of Darby, where he raised his seven children in loving partnership with his late wife of 42 years, Jean Ann (née Bortner) McGonigle. He served his neighborhood devotedly as a member of the Civil Service Hiring Board, coach for Darby little league and the Colwyn Comets, and honorary father and reliable friend.

Gene was a cowboy at heart who enjoyed fishing, telling lively stories, and being the life of the party in his favorite places, Summerland Key, Florida and Fortescue, New Jersey, with his longtime companion, Claudia Lee. She loved and cared for him until the very end.

Gene was the loving father of Brian McGonigle (Carol), Stephen McGonigle (Donna), Colleen Gallagher, Eileen Stubblebine (Jay), Kevin McGonigle (Elaine), and Damon McGonigle (Michelle). He was the best Poppop to his 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. They were his entire world. Gene is predeceased by his wife, Jean Ann (née Bortner) McGonigle, son, Christopher McGonigle, and grandson, Kyle McGonigle.

Relatives and Friends are invited to his Visitation Monday, August 3^rd, 9:30 AM – 11:15 AM followed by his Funeral Mass 11:30 AM ALL IN CHURCH at Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 1101 Main St, Darby, PA 19023. Inurnment Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.

Sorry to learn of the passing of an incredible human being. Gene and I werer Utility Boys at Pennland Printing Company in the late 1950's. Over the years, I became a very close Friends of members of his Family and I am still in touch with some of them to this day.

I was so sad when I heard of Mr Genie passing. He, and his wife Jean, and Brian, Stephen, Colleen, Chris, Kevin, Damon were my neighbors for 32 years. I cannot have had better neighbors, or friends, with all of them.. All were easy to know, willing to help and a good family. He will be missed by all who knew him. He got to see his grandson, make it to the big times in baseball. I so glad he was able to enjoy that. You all have great memories. Love you all - God bless. What a beautiful tribute. Gene was certainly loved and respected by all that were fortunate to be part of his life. I will always cherish the wonderful memories we shared in Italy and of course, our Fortescue crabbing days. This is a major loss to your family. Please take comfort in the unforgettable memories you shared with Gene.

Mr. Mcgonigle was a great role model for us Darby kids, the mcgonigle door was always open. He will be missed by many❤️
