Frank A Sgro Jr., (aka “The Fastest Man in Drexel Hill”) age 79, passed away peacefully February 28, 2026 surrounded by his entire family. He was born February 7, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Frank and Madeleine Sgro.
Frank attended St. Bernadette’s Grade School where he excelled in several sports: basketball, baseball, track and football. He is best known for helping St. Bernie’s beat St. Dot’s in the Turkey Bowl, and (more impressively) almost running over his future wife, a cheerleader on the sidelines. Frank went on to Monsignor Bonner and Marple Newtown High School, then eventually Villanova University.
While in college, Frank reconnected with the fearless cheerleader at a mixer. Rumor has it, Joanne Carmella Venditti was at the dance with another fella, but was swept off her feet by Frank’s dashing good looks, hazel eyes, and of course the greatest pickup line ever, “my mom knows your mom.” From that point on, they were inseparable.
Frank married Joanne on May 16, 1970, turned her into a Sgro, and had 5 children in 7 years. Joanne famously has no recollection of the 70s. Just babies. Lots and lots of babies.
Frank and Joanne had a beautiful life together, raising their children the only way they knew how–with love, laughter, and kindness. Frank coached all 5 kids in every sport, and grabbed 2 more victories against St. Dot’s, but this time on the sidelines with a whistle.
He worked for CONRAIL for many years, became a realtor alongside his wife, then eventually having his golf shirt retired in the rafters at TransUnion.
Frank is survived by his wife, Joanne, daughters Joanne (Scott), Jennifer and Maria, two sons Frank III and Joe, his sisters Mary Ann Mulhern (Kevin) and Rose Drescher (Alex), and his 6 grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart: Danny, Tommy, Frankie, Jake, Robert and Gianna, along with many other family and friends who are devastated by his loss.
Relatives, friends, and Jason Kelce are invited to celebrate his life on Thursday, March 5th at St. Bernadette Church 1035 Turner Ave, Drexel Hill, PA 19026. Viewing from 9:30am-11:15am followed immediately by his funeral mass at 11:30am, then burial at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery 1600 S. Sproul Road, Springfield, PA 19064.
