Helen Walker Worst Nowell died Nov. 24, 2004 at home in the company of her family, due to complications from cancer. She was 77 years old. A long-time resident of Middletown Twp., Delaware County, PA, Mrs. Nowell was born and raised in Swarthmore, PA. She graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1945 and worked as a regional manager of catalogue sales for Sears and Roebuck. In 1950, she married a high school classmate, Peter C. Nowell. They moved to Middletown Twp. in 1957 and raised 5 children. A dedicated homemaker and mother, Mrs. Nowell was also a life long learner with a great appreciation of the arts and culture. She pursued various interests and hobbies that ranged from art and antiques to jewelry making and Japanese flower arranging. She was a volunteer at The School in Rose Valley when her chldren were students and later as a clasroom assistant in the art program at Wallingford Elementary school. Mrs. Nowell remained physically active throughout her life; walking, weight training and playing tennis into her early 70’s. She was an involved grandparent who could often be found on the sidelines or in the audience of her grandchildren’s activities. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Peter C. Nowell, four children and their spouses: Timothy Nowell Janice, Karen King Thomas, Kristin Nowell Carolyn Jimenez, and Michael Nowell Lauren de Moll. She was predeceased by her daughter, Sharon Nowell, in 2000. In addition, she is survived by four siblings: Eva Widdowson, Esther Larsen, Joanne Walmsley and Robert Worst and 7 grandchildren.
Her warm and generous spirit will also by missed by many friends and extended family.
A private burial will be held in Compass, PA with a celebration of Mrs. Nowell’s life, planned for January 15, 2005.
