James “Jim” Mitchell, a resident of Garnet Valley, PA, and former 40-year resident of Ridley Twp., PA, born on April 15, 1951, in Glenolden, PA, passed away on November 29, 2023.
Predeceased by his parents James W. Mitchell and Frances R (Matt) Mitchell.
Jim’s journey through life began as a proud graduate of Interboro High School’s Class of 1969, after which he continued his education at Widener University. He found the start of his professional path and the love of his life, Dorothy, at First Pennsylvania Bank. Jim and Dorothy, united in marriage in 1974, shared a bond of love and companionship that flourished over the years. In 1984, Jim channeled his ambition and expertise into starting his own CPA practice. This venture evolved into a family affair, as he later partnered with his son Jeffrey to create Mitchell & Mitchell CPAs, LLC, a testament to his professional acumen and dedication.
Jim was renowned for hosting delightful family gatherings and parties, where his love for red wine and a good story always made for a memorable evening. His appreciation for culinary experiences led him to explore and cherish the diverse restaurants of Philadelphia….his favorite being Spasso’s Italian Grill.
An enthusiastic sailor, Jim developed his love for the sea as a young man in Ocean City, NJ, where he first learned to sail on a Hobie Cat. This early venture into sailing laid the groundwork for a lifelong devotion to the sport. As time went on, Jim expanded his horizons, skillfully maneuvering larger sailboats on the broad expanse of the Chesapeake Bay, carrying forward the zeal and expertise cultivated in his youth. His involvement in the sailing world extended beyond the water; he was a committed member and served as Treasurer of the Great Oak Yacht Club for seven years, underscoring his deep connection to the sailing community. His other affiliations included the Sons of the American Revolution, AICPA, and PICPA, reflecting his diverse interests and commitment to professional excellence.
Jim leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories, marked by his love for family, friends, his clients, and his dogs, King, Java, and Jack, who preceded him in death. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years Dorothy A. (McLaughlin) Mitchell; sons, Jeffrey (Anastasiya), Brian (Erica), and Kevin; and his adored grandchildren, Elliot, and Matilda.
As we remember Jim, we celebrate the enduring impact he made on all who knew him. His spirit and stories will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
