John David Khawam
Of Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, John D. Khawam, a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on September 2, 2024, at the age of 78. His passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
John was of Lebanese and Syrian descent. Raised in the Holy Lands from the age of 12, he was nurtured by the Franciscans in the Holy Church. His upbringing in this sacred environment allowed him to walk in the footsteps of Christ, shaping his deep spirituality and infusing his life with elegance and grace.
John was a man of extraordinary talents and accomplishments. Fluent in seven languages and a world-renowned historian, he dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the appreciation of history. His scholarly pursuits were matched by his musical genius—John was a classically trained pianist and composer who played over ten instruments with unmatched skill.
John’s love story began during a Church youth group outing to the beach, where he first met Marcelle. It was love at first sight, and she remained the love of his life until his final breath. In 1975, John moved to the United States to build a new home for Marcelle and their four children.
In America, John combined his musical gifts with his expertise in the insurance industry to provide for his family. His dedication and hard work were evident in every aspect of his life, from his professional achievements to his unwavering commitment to his loved ones.
John’s legacy lives on through his family and the countless lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and artistic brilliance. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Marcelle (née Schaccal); his four children, Caroline M. Khawam-Towne, David J. Khawam, Natalie K. Case (Tim), and Gilberte Jill Kelley (Dr. Scott); his eleven grandchildren, Ashley, Johnny, Lauren, Marcelle, John, Natalie, Sophia, Caroline, Isabelle, Grayson, and Annabelle; one great-granddaughter, Madeline; and one great-grandbaby on the way. He is also survived by his siblings, Razek Khawam, Renee Khawam, Claire Khawam, and Andre Khawam, his cousin Joseph Khawam and family.
Predeceased by his parents, Agnes (née Abdel Ahad) and Daoud H. Khawam, and his brother Reverand Gilberte Khawam, his sister Marcelle Khawam and his Uncle Patriarch Ignace Peter VIII Abdel Ahad, The Syriac Patriarch of Antioch.
John Khawam’s life was a testament to the beauty of love, the pursuit of knowledge, and the power of music. He will be profoundly missed but cherished in the hearts of all who knew him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
