Karl F. Pomeroy, Sr., 86, of Malvern, PA died peacefully and went home to rest with the Lord on April 18, 2024. Karl was known by all for always being full of life. His smile, sense of humor and the genuine kindness that he showed to others were evident even in his last hours.
Karl was born on December 18, 1937 Lewiston, Maine to parents Arlene Currier Pomeroy and the Honorable Charles A. Pomeroy. Raised in Portland, Maine, Karl graduated from Deering High School and attended Upsala College. As a young man, Karl landed in the insurance industry where he stayed for his entire successful career. Karl worked in sales at Union Mutual Insurance Company, and later moved to be the Regional Sales Manager at Reliance Standard Life Insurance Company where he worked for most of his career. Eventually becoming the Vice President of Sales, Karl was responsible for hiring, training and mentoring his national sales force. He found enjoyment and purpose in providing guidance and support to new hires. Karl valued community and camaraderie, as he built lifelong friendships with his colleagues. His sense of community was strong, and he took great pleasure in his retirement years driving cancer patients to and from treatments.
In his younger years, Karl was a skilled snow skier employed with the Ski Patrol at Sunday River Ski Resort in Bethel, Maine. He strapped skis to his children at young ages and enjoyed numerous family ski trips together in Maine for years.
Karl’s favorite activity of all was the game of golf. He was a member of Waynesborough Country Club for two decades, and a member of Stonewall Golf Club when it opened. He enjoyed socializing with friends and family as he completed countless rounds of golf. Golfing with his boys and his Dad, “Governor” were some of his most cherished memories.
Above all else, Karl’s greatest love was his family. He shared 42 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Suzanne, until she passed away in June of 2022. Together, Karl and Sue raised 7 children: Kimberly Wolferth (John), Lyn Herzog, Sheryl Herzog Monastero (Benjamin), Jill Pezza (Jim), Cheryl Pomeroy McMahon (Scott), John Pomeroy (Char), Ric Pomeroy (Sharon) and a foster daughter, Dianna Harrison. Karl and Sue were blessed with 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Family gatherings were frequent, and always full of laughs. Poppop, as he was known, was his grandkids’ biggest fan, proudly attending, and rarely missing, school and sporting events, birthday parties and graduation ceremonies. When not surrounded by their family, Karl and Sue loved to travel. Their ventures took them to all parts of the world – Turkey, the Caribbean Islands, Hawaii, and Greece, to name a few.
Karl was a devout Christian and a scholar of the Bible right up to the end of his life. He very much enjoyed the friendship and fellowship he had with his men’s bible study group at Christ Community Church in West Chester and the congregation at Calvary Chapel in Chester Springs.
Karl was preceded in death by his wife Suzanne Pomeroy, parents Arlene and Charles Pomeroy, brother David Pomeroy, sister Charlene Kinnelly, and his foster daughter, Dianna Harrison. Karl is survived by his sister, Pamela Gilliam, his sister-in-law, Marilyn Pomeroy, multiple nieces, nephews, cousins, 7 children, 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of Karl’s life on May 23, 2024. Visitation from 9:00 – 10:00 am, service immediately following at Christ Community Church, 1190 Phoenixville Pike, West Chester, PA 19380.
