Sister Margaret Mary Murray, RSM Sister Margaret Mary Murray (formerly Sister Mariella), age 82, died Friday, April 26, 2013 at McAuley Convent in Merion Station. Sister was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Margaret V. Murray. She attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and remained a devoted “Carmelite” throughout her life. After graduating from John W. Hallahan High School in 1948, she worked as a secretary for several years at American Express. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in September 1951 and professed vows in March 1954. She spent 19 years in elementary education, teaching at schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and in the Dioceses of Raleigh, NC; Camden, NJ; and Allentown, PA. Sister earned a B.A. in Humanities (1965) from Villanova University. In 1973 Sister joined the faculty of Merion Mercy Academy. Teaching in the Business department, she drew upon her work experience and her studies for a Certificate for Secretarial Science (1984). After leaving the classroom, Sister worked in auxiliary services at Archbishop Ryan High School and at St. Maria Goretti High School. While at Goretti Sister resided at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Convent where she enjoyed being “home”. In 2006, Sister retired to McAuley Convent where she engaged in the ministry of prayer. She enjoyed shows by visiting musicians and always requested that they play Golden Slippers while she did the Mummers’ Strut. Services for Sister Margaret Mary will be held Wednesday, May 1 at the Convent of Mercy Chapel, Merion, with a viewing at 6:00 pm followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 7:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Community Cemetery on Thursday, May 2 at 10:00 am.
