I consider myself very lucky to have not only been placed in Mrs Leagans class way back in first grade but also to have had the opportunity to see and speak with her later in life. There were many great teachers who influenced me but Mrs Leagans was the first. Her belief in me and the support she showed me in first grade still resonates. I often still hear her voice in my head when I’m having a hard time, and as a teacher myself I find myself repeating and sharing things she taught me. From the finger exercises to strengthen our hands for writing, to the whispers as she passed my desk saying “you can do this, I know you can” and always having extra math coloring pages to help me get better with math (sneaky!) I learned so much that I use today in my own classroom. Then seeing the Kids on the Block shows with my students and talking to her as a young adult about ways to reach kids and make an impact. Her light will be sorely missed in this world, but all those she taught will continue to carry forward those lessons of encouragement, of love, of finding ways to make learning fun and engaging and meeting children where they are at. Godspeed and thank you for bringing your light to us for so long.

In the beginning of first grade 53 years ago I had some trouble socially, and when I improved Marianne praised me plenty! I'll also always remember a day I advanced to the next reading level, and she marked my work with a big smile on her face!

Words can’t even describe the dedication she has for her students. She never didn’t have a smile on her face at NPE and when my family had two back to back deaths at Christmas 2001 she was there for us . A women who truly knew what her calling was and chased it . Thank you for all you gave
