Mark Francis Nixon

Mark Francis Nixon, formerly of Wayne, PA, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2006 at the age of 84. Mark was born in Tyrone, PA to the late Robert John and Verna Woodring Nixon. After graduating from Altoona High School, he attended Pennsylvania State University. He worked for Bell Telephone Co. of PA for 42 years, beginning as a cable splice helper. This service was interrupted by WWII, when Mark flew as a Navigator with the Eighth Air Force in England under the command of Elliot Roosevelt, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. He completed 39 combat mission over Germany and France and was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf clusters, The Distinguished Flying Cross, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the European Theatre of War Medal with three battle stars.

After various assignment with the Telephone Co. throughout PA, Mark was transferred to Bell’s Philadelphia Headquarters where he was responsible for the advertising division of the Yellow Pages Directory for the entire state. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of Logan Lodge No. 490, located in Altoona. He faithfully attended service at Church of the Savior in Wayne, PA.

In 1988, Mark and his wife, Zetta deceased moved to Whispering Pines, NC, where they had 18 years of wonderful retirement life, playing golf. He returned to Paoli in July, 2005 to be closer to his children. He is survived by two sons, Mark R. Nixon of Alexandria, VA, and J. Stephen Nixon, his wife, Coleen , and their three children, Connor, Emily, and Kate of Wakefield, Mass. Also survived is his daughter, Lisbeth N. Ottensman and her husband, Donald, of Devon, their two daughters, Amy L. Yatsko of Devon and Megan O. Gomez of Manhattan Beach, CA and on great-granddaughter, Ella C. Yatsko.

Funeral services and interment are private.
