Sister Mary de Mercedes Breen, 92, died Oct. 18 at McAuley Convent.
In addition to her religious famiy, Sister is survived by nieces, Marie Burger of Cherry Hill, NJ and Alice Waldron of Camp Hill, PA. In 1933, Sister Mary de Mercedes professed vows as a Sister of Mercy. She earned a BS in Education from Villanova and an MA in Sacred Science from St. Bonaventure University.
From 1933 to 1970, Sister Mercedes taught elementary school at St. Matthias School, St. Margaret School, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. Joseph in Summit Hill, Sacred Heart School in Nesquehoning, PA. Our Mother of Good Counsel School and St. Barbara School. While teaching at St. Barbara School, Sister also taught religion at Little Flower High School and Cardinal Dougherty High School. In 1970, Sister Mercedes taught at Gwynedd-Mercy College until 1978 and also was liaison with Edmonda Hall at the Gwynedd-Mercy College, Darby Campus.
In 1978 Sister Mercedes became Director of Facilities at Walsingham Academy, Williamsburg, VA and in 1979 until 1982 was Director of Grounds at Gwynedd-Mercy College. Sister then assisted the Director of Food Services at the Motherhouse in Merion until 2000 when she then retired to Prayer Ministry at McAuley Convent.
