Massimo Joseph DiDonato, known affectionately as Joe, passed away on September 12, 2024, at the age of 101, in Media, Pennsylvania. Born on April 10, 1923, in Philadelphia, Joe lived a life marked by dedication, service, and joy.
Joe proudly served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945, during which time he was stationed in the Pacific Theater of World War II. His commitment to his country was a significant part of his life story and character.
Following his military service, Joe utilized the GI Bill to pursue an engineering degree from Drexel University, attending night school while building his career. He embarked on a professional path as an HVAC engineer with United Engineers and later moved into quality control for SEPTA. His meticulous nature and strong work ethic made him a respected figure in his field.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Joe had a passion for dancing, both for entertainment and competitively, which brought him much joy and vitality. He also cherished going on cruises, a hobby that allowed him to explore new places and experience the serenity of the sea.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ercole and Vienna DiDonato; his brother, Alexander; his loving wife, Ruth Schwenk ; and his children, Jean Poplawski and John DiDonato. He is survived by his sister, Rose Gianonna, and his children, Anthony and Francis DiDonato, Joan Hansen, and Janice Jacoby. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Thomas, David, Jonathan, Daniel, James, LeighAnn, and Jessica, who will remember him for his strength, of profound impact, marked by his dedication to his family, his career, and his country. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing 9:00 a.m. followed by his Funeral Mass 10:00 am ALL IN CHURCH on Wednesday Sept. 18th at Presentation B.V.M Church 240 Haverford Rd. Wynnewood, PA 19096, Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
