In loving memory of Richard “Rick” B. Latham, aged 80, of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2025. Born on September 19, 1945, in Philadelphia, Rick grew up in the West Park and Woodside Park neighborhood, where his lifelong love of family, history, and humor began.
In 1983, Rick married the love of his life, Carol Falcon, after six years of courtship. Together they built a beautiful life in Bryn Mawr, raising their two children, Richard “Scott” and Emily Jeanne. They shared 40 wonderful years of marriage. Rick was a devoted husband, father, and a proud “Pappy” to his beloved granddaughter, Brynn Bolt.
Rick was predeceased by his parents, John Latham and Cynthia Young Latham. He is survived by his daughter Emily Latham-Bolt (Michael), granddaughter Brynn, son Richard “Scott,” sister Patricia (Adams) Simpson, brother John Knapp Latham, cousin, Patricia (Latham) Cunningham, and stepmother Elaine Latham.
Rick was part of a long-established American family whose roots trace back to the Mayflower, with 17 Lathams having served in the Revolutionary War. His great-grandfather, Lorenzo Dow Butler Shaw, was a noted inventor and amusement park builder who constructed Woodside Amusement Park in the 1890s. Rick’s mother’s family, the Shaws and Youngs, spent summers at the park until its closing in 1956.
Rick also came from a long line of photographers. His great-great-grandfather held patents in photography and operated one of the earliest chains of photographic studios in the United States, stretching from Boston to Washington, D.C. Mentored by his father, Rick proudly continued the family’s photographic legacy.
After graduating from high school, Rick attended St. Joseph’s College at night while completing a four-year Federal apprenticeship in photo lithography and graphic photography with the Beck Company in Philadelphia. He honorably served in the U.S. Army Infantry.
Rick spent his career in printing and publishing, holding key leadership roles including; Senior Technical Representative at Phototype Engraving, Vice President at Howard Printing, Director of Technical Sales at Baum Printing, Vice President of Sales at Creative Communications, and Corporate Sales at Triune Color.
After retiring from corporate life in 2011, Rick continued to share his expertise as a consultant in the printing and publishing industry. One of his proudest professional accomplishments was spearheading the original launch of Men’s Health at Rodale Press, the most successful launch of its kind in the category.
Since the 1890s, the Latham and Shaw families were devoted members of St. Asaph’s Church in Bala Cynwyd. In 1965, at the request of Rector Edgar Adams, Rick founded St. Asaph Press, which produced the church’s publications for 25 years. His dedication to the parish was described as “equaled by very few.”
Rick also shared his technical skills generously, teaching night classes in photography and lithography at the Philadelphia Lithographic Institute and at the Graphic Art Institute, where he taught graphics, color theory, and scanning theory.
In the 1980s, at the request of Robert Rodale, Rick directed the Fine Arts Print Program for Wildlands Conservancy. Over more than two decades, this initiative became a cherished and impactful fundraising program.
Rick’s warmth, generosity, and quick wit left lasting impressions on everyone he met. His sense of humor was legendary – he didn’t just tell jokes, he invented them. His friendships were lifelong, and he delighted in nurturing new ones.
The Chesapeake Bay was his sanctuary, where he enjoyed organizing chartered fishing and duck hunting events with family and friends. Rick lived fully and gave freely of his time, talent, and heart.
