Richard “Dick” Lehr Sr.

Richard “Dick” Lehr, Sr., of Aston, PA, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026. Throughout a more than 34-year battle with prostate cancer, Dick faced every challenge with remarkable strength, humility, and determination, never losing hope nor uttering a complaint.

Born and raised in Tremont, PA, Dick’s family moved to Chester, where he graduated from Chester High School and married his sweetheart and love of his life. Dick was a devoted husband of 70 years to the late Dorothy “Dot” Lehr, eldest son of the late Harry & Florence Lehr, beloved brother of the late Patsy (Thomas) Garrett and Robert Lehr; and is survived by his brother Ronald (Chris) Lehr, sister-in-law Rose Lehr, sister Judith (late George) Myers, sister Karen (Richard) Crabtree, brother James (Genie) Lehr, and brother Dennis (Connie) Lehr.

Loving father of Doris (Jim) Smith, Richard, Jr. (Shellia) Lehr, Kim (Dave) Bernard, Janice (Al) Misci, and Ada (Chris) Conrad.

Dick was the cherished grandfather of 17 grandchildren, lovingly called “Pops” or “Poppop”:

Jimmy (Kim) Smith, Tricia (Chris) McCracken, Tina (Brian) Bennett, Brian (Dani) Smith, Julie (Jon) Diodati, Richie (Savannah) Lehr, Cody (Katie) Lehr, Dallas (Lazaro) Lehr, Jennifer (late William) Stewart, Michelle Bernard (John Weikel), Brenda (Brandon) Clarke, Albie (Melanie) Misci, Alicia (Thomas) Kaestner, Kyle (Olivia) Misci, Rebecca Conrad (Mike Sarver), Emily Conrad (Justin Parisi), Sarah (Dominick) DiDonato.

He was the proud great-grandfather, “Poppop Dick”, of 25 great-grandchildren:

James, Jackson, Addison, Chris, Allie, Kylie, Cora, Ayla, Ezra, Maverick, Maclee, Makaila, Michael, Kirsten, Annabella, Layla, Emma, Jaxson, Joey, Maxine, Liam, Marlo, Sophia, Ella, Roman.

Above all else, Dick was devoted to his wife and their family. Nothing brought him greater joy than time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and you could always count on being greeted with that friendly, kind smile of his. When his grandchildren were growing up, you could find Dick at any ballfield having a great time watching his grandchildren playing sports. He cherished his and Dot’s life together, especially the many memories they made with their young family on trips to Ocean Beach to visit his Aunt Doris.

Throughout the years, Dick continued to take every opportunity to be with family and enjoyed experiencing new places, even visiting Germany twice in his late seventies and early eighties. He was genuinely happiest when surrounded by those he loved, and he made sure they all knew it.

Dick is known for his gentle and kind demeanor as well as his many years of dedication and service to his beloved community of Aston. He began his career with Aston Township in 1958 in the Public Works department for five years and returned in 1971 as Township Roadmaster. Through his hard work, integrity, and trusted leadership, he worked his way up to Township Secretary/Manager, serving in that role from 1987 until his retirement in 2013. Even then, he continued as Township Secretary for several years and then offered guidance and support as a consultant to Aston Township. Among the accomplishments of which he was most proud were the construction of the Aston Township Community Center and the dedication of the Veterans Memorial at Five Points, lasting tributes to the community he served so faithfully.

Beyond his career, Dick was a faithful member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church and the Glen Riddle Rotary Club. He found joy in attending Sunday church service as well as volunteering. He cherished the years spent serving up hot dogs and hamburgers at Aston Community Day and Glen Riddle Rotary fairs, and happily supported the many other local organizations.

Dick will always be remembered by his remarkable strength and unwavering resilience. Even after losing the love of his life earlier this year, Dick still fought on with the calm, quiet strength that is so characteristic of him. He will remain a role model for those who knew him to never give up, be thankful for your loved ones, and to appreciate each day no matter what the circumstances may be.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Friday, August 21 from 5 to 7 PM at the Aston Township / James McGinn Community Center & Library, 3270 Concord Road, and on Saturday August 22 from 9:30 to 10:45 AM at Mount Hope United Methodist Church, 4020 Concord Road, Aston, PA, followed by a service at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
