Bobby, Dad, Pop Pop & Captain Bob were only a few of his many nicknames. This amazing, hardworking man had more talents and people who loved him than anyone we know! He was truly the “Captain” in all aspects of his life. Bob was loved by his parents who taught him good values and how to become an honorable man. He met his High School Sweetheart and love of his life Joanne at the age of 15. They were true soul mates and inseparable until his last day here on earth. He enlisted in the Army National Guard at the age of 18 and served our country for 6 years.
Bob and Joanne married in March 1973 and in 1976 had a baby girl they named Jill Maria. She was their one and only daughter. Bob was an amazing and devoted father. He taught Jill everything he could to prepare her for life including how to ride a bike, play softball, change a tire, buff a car, drive a tow truck, become a boat captain, water ski, fix just about anything and so much more. One of his favorite things to do was to coach Jill in softball and he took her to pitching lessons from little league all the way through college. Bob (and Joanne) openly welcomed Darren into the family in 1991 and treated him like his son. He taught him how to care for and love his daughter the way he did. He provided a great life for his family and loved us more than anything.
Bob enjoyed riding his Harley with his biker chic on the back and became a true boater. He learned about boating from his Uncle Bud who was a great guy. This quickly became Bob’s favorite hobby and weekend getaway with his family and friends. He shared his knowledge of boating with everyone and taught us how to navigate the waters, drive the boat, and become his 1st Mates. The “Wild Thing” was born and its name was transferred to the many boats he acquired over the years that lived on the Delaware River and eventually moved to the Chesapeake Bay. He took us all out on the boat for endless miles of site seeing, anchoring out, and water skiing. “Wild Thing” went all over the Delaware River and Chesapeake Bay carrying all of his precious cargo…his family and friends. Bobby loved our family vacations in Sea Isle City, NJ. In recent years, we rented a house on the bay to dock “Little Thing” and the wave runner. Captain Bobby ensured everyone had a great time. Florida was another favorite vacation destination for Bob and Joanne. They visited Venice Beach for their 50th Wedding Anniversary in March and had a wonderful time relaxing on the beach, going out to dinner and having fun at the bonfires on the beach. Bob’s ultimate favorite pastime was “Sittin’ on the dock of the bay watching the tide roll away” with his beautiful bride of 50 years, Jill, Darren, Logan, Cooper and ALL of their friends!
Bob was truly one of those guys who could fix anything with an engine and loved auto body work. He loved his classic cars & motorcycles and owned quite a few over the years. He owned his own business, “Bob’s Auto Body and Repair”, for 18 years. His work was meticulous, and nothing left his shop in less-than-perfect condition. He only hired good workers and taught them everything he knew. His best employees and friends for many years were Joe Jung and Bill Ballinger. He taught them all of his secrets for perfection when it came to auto body work. Joanne also worked for the business and kept him in line! He took a break from the business and eventually landed at Allstate. He started out as a field adjuster and worked his way up to a Subrogation Specialist. Bob was 71 years old, still working full-time and teaching others every day how to do the job right.
Bob became a Pop Pop when Logan was born in 2001 and Cooper in 2004. He taught his boys everything he possibly could and that is not an exaggeration. He gave them so many tools and words of wisdom to grow and learn about life. Pop Pop helped Darren coach the boys in baseball with CVLL, basketball with GVBL, and football with GVFL for over 10 years. He volunteered all his free time to his grandsons and youth sports within the GV Community in which he lived. He touched the lives of so many impressionable young boys and men while doing so, always with a smile and positive energy every day. He was so proud of Darren for being an amazing husband and father to his grandsons and would do anything for them. He loved his daughter Jilly so much and knew she would be well taken care of when he was gone.
Bob loved playing basketball every week with his buddies. It was a “must do” every Wednesday night at Ridley High School.
Bobby was the Captain of his ship and his family. He truly loved life and his family even more. His transition to Heaven was sudden and he left us way too soon. We are so thankful to have had him in our lives for as long as we did and treasure every moment. We are absolutely certain he is in Heaven reuniting with his family, friends & pets, gathering a team together to play basketball, sharing his knowledge with all, finding a team to Coach, loving his amazing new yacht, sipping on his Scotch & Corona, riding his Harley, fixing stuff, missing all of us dearly, having a blast, and most importantly sending us the strength to live without him.
“So Long” to our Captain until we meet again. We love you, Bobby!
