Ruth A. McCarthy of Media, Pa passed away peacefully on October 8, 2026. Born on February 7, 1939, to the late Howard and Helen (Cassidy) Bryan, Ruth attended Eddystone Elementary and High Schools, graduating in 1957. She was an active young woman who played field hockey and basketball, swam competitively, sang in the glee club, and marched in the school band. Her love of swimming even earned her a yellow ribbon at the University of Pennsylvania.
Ruth’s love story with Jack McCarthy began with a little help from their mothers. A date was arranged and their first date was at the Stanley Movie Theatre. They married on October 17, 1959, at St. Rose of Lima Church, celebrated with family and friends at the VFW in Eddystone, and honeymooned in New York City for a long weekend. Ruth and Jack settled in Chester and were married for 23 years, until Jack’s passing in 1982.
Ruth was a hardworking woman who held a variety of jobs throughout her life, including working at St. Paul’s Church in Chester, Viscose in Marcus Hook, the Scott Paper Coupon Redemption Center, and Citizens Bank, where she became a head teller before retiring in 2004.
But her greatest accomplishment was her family. Ruth was the mother of the late Jack McCarthy and is survived by her daughter-in-law, Anne Marie Pierdomenico (John); her sons, Michael McCarthy (Christine) and Tim McCarthy (Nancy); her cherished sisters, Mary Kupsis and Judy Fromholzer (Bill); seven grandchildren — Meghan Sullivan (CJ), Colleen Campbell (Brian), Caitlyn McCarthy, Michael McCarthy (Rachel), Kristin Morford (Phillip), Julia McCarthy and Matthew McCarthy; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was a devoted Phillies fan and loved everything baseball. She enjoyed watching Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D., as well as HGTV and the Food Network channels. She enjoyed her trips to Rehoboth Beach and Naples, Florida—places where she could relax, enjoy the sunshine with friends and family.
Ruth leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will carry her love with them always. Her story reminds us that a beautiful life is not measured only by great accomplishments, but by the love we give, the people we cherish, and the memories we leave behind.
The family is grateful to the Sunrise Assisted Living Community in Media Pa and especially Edna Bantama, who took great care of her at Sunrise and for the hospice nurses and doctors at Paoli hospital.
