ObituarySr. Mary Alma Joseph Miller RSMSister Alma Joseph Miller (Clara M. Miller), a parochial school teacher for many years, aged 90, died Sept. 3 at McAuley Convent in Merion Station. She was raised in Philadelphia along with her brother Joseph by George and Margaret Miller. Sister is a Little Flower High School graduate with a B.A. in Elementary Education from Villanova University. Sister Alma served as an elementary teacher for 45 years. She ministered in the dioceses of Philadelphia, Allentown, Camden, Richmond and Portland (OR). Her ministry continued as she served as house manager at St. Mary’s Convent for Elderly Women for ten years. For the following nine years Sister was a member of the support staff at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Merion, PA. She became a resident of McAuley Convent in 2011. Sister Alma will be remembered as a prayerful, simple, unassuming and caring presence. She loved her many years in education and was loved by her students. She participated fully in all the activities that her later years presented with enthusiastic interest. Many recall her dry wit and healthy sense of humor which sustained her in good times and bad. Her keen mind followed both community and world events.During her later years of retirement at McAuley Convent, Sister Alma took seriously her ministry of prayer. She had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother and her rosary was a constant source of support. Sister was born on the feast of St. Joseph and held him as a special patron. Intercessory prayer for those in need was always part of her daily prayer.Relatives and friends are invited to a Visitation Saturday, Sept. 9, 10-11am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, 515 Montgomery Avenue, Merion Station, PA 19066. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery. Contributions in Sister’s memory may be sent to the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community at the above address.
