Sister Margaret “Sister Peggy” Mahoney

Sister Margaret Mahoney RSMSister Margaret Mahoney, (formerly Mary Aloysius Mahoney), age 70, died peacefully at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington DE on November 14, surrounded by her sister and her religious community of the Sisters of Mercy.Sister Peggy graduated from Gwynedd Mercy Academy in 1964. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1964 and professed vows in 1967. Her ministries as a Sister of Mercy included teaching elementary school in the dioceses of Philadelphia and Raleigh NC. Her ministries also included Director of Religious Education in both of these dioceses. In 1987 after a year internship, Sister Peggy established the first Development office for the Sisters of Mercy at Merion, a position she held for the next nine years. Sister continued in various aspects of Institutional Advancement both in the Diocese of Philadelphia and the Diocese of Wilmington. These included Director of Development for the Dominican Sisters of Elkins Park, Director of Development for her alma mater, Gwynedd Mercy Academy, Director of Planned Giving for the Diocese of Wilmington, Foundation Assistant, St. Francis Hospital Foundation, a position she held until her death.Sister Margaret brought joy and enthusiasm to each of her ministries. From the special care she gave to her little students in the classroom to her passion for the works of the Sisters of Mercy that she helped to support through fund raising efforts, Sister Peggy shared her inner joy with all she met.Sister is survived by her sister, Maryann Mahoney-Biglin, her brother-in-law Terrence, cousins, and her religious community.Services for Sister Margaret Mahoney will be Monday, November 21 at the Convent of Mercy Chapel, Merion Station, with a viewing from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 7:00 pm.
