Sister Teresa Mary McGhee, age 77, of the Sisters of Mercy, Merion, died on February 8, 2006, of cancer at McAuley Convent.
In addition to her religious family, Sister Teresa Mary is survived by her cousin, Louise Caponi O’Brien and cousin, Noreen Gerace.
In 1949, Sister Teresa Mary professed vows as a Sister of Mercy. She earned a B.A. in Mathematics and a M.A. in Latin from Villanova University.
Sister Teresa Mary taught grade 4 from 1949 to 1952, at Waldron Mercy Academy and taught grades 4, 7, 8 and 9 from 1952 to 1957 at St. John the Apostle School, Hialeah, FL. Sister taught Latin from 1957 to 1958 at Archbishop Prendergast High School and 1958 to 1962 at Hallahan High School. Sister Teresa Mary then moved to Williamsburg, VA to teach Latin, Mathematics and Religion at Walsingham Academy from 1962 to 1965. In 1965 to 1970, Sister became Prefect of Discipline at Cardinal O’Hara High School and was Director of Vocations from 1968 to 70.
In 1970, Sister Teresa Mary became Principal of Waldron Mercy Academy, in 1972, she became Vice-Principal at Archbishop Prendergast High School until 1977. Sister then became Principal of Bishop Conwell High School, Levittown, in 1986 she became Principal of St. Maria Goretti High School and in 1993 until 2000, she was Principal at Merion-Mercy Academy. Sister then went on Sabbatical for a year. Sister Teresa Mary then moved on as a Development Assistant at Mercy Health System in Conshohocken.
Viewing is Sunday, February 12th at 5:45 PM, followed by Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 7 PM in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will be Monday, February 13th at 10 AM in the Sisters of Mercy Cemetery in Merion.
